How soon we forget. This time last year I was braving the frozen tundra of Massachusetts where I actually had snow on my birthday for the first time in my life. Here in the South today, the high is only supposed to be 47 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s not even below freezing. We haven’t had our first frost of the year. And yet, I’m shivering. I’m sure it’s because we have a wet cold. I don’t even know what that means, but all my life that’s how I’ve heard Southerners justify why our cold is colder and our hot is hotter.
“Sure it gets to be the temperature of the sun in Las Vegas, but it’s a dry heat. When it’s 82 here, that’s the equivalent of a million degrees anywhere else because of the humidity.”
“They may have a foot of snow in Minnesota, but our forty-five degrees is wetter and just cuts right through you.”
My point is, whether I should be or not, I’m cold. But you know, I don’t necessarily mind the cold because I love soft, cuddly, blankets, fresh from the dryer. I love fuzzy socks (except when I’m sleeping). I love having an excuse to stay home by a fireplace. And I love hot beverages. I have the ingredients for spice tea and homemade hot chocolate on my grocery list and I think I’m even going to try to make homemade marshmallows this year.
I especially like sitting with a friend and enjoying each other’s company whilst sipping a steaming hot mug of goodness. If we were together for my birthday and I could plan an ideal day, I’d schedule some time for us to sit and have a long talk over chai latte from Starbucks. Or you could order whatever you wanted. Since I’m probably not going to be with most of you on my birthday for my ideal day, I thought I’d give you the opportunity to enjoy a visit with a friend at Starbucks on me. Today’s gift is a $10 Starbucks gift card. If you win, you have to promise that you’ll share your prize with a friend and enjoy a fun conversation in my honor. I can even give you topics to discuss if you’d like. Knowing most of you, you don’t need my help. 😉
I was glad to see all of your sweet names in the comments yesterday. I know it sometimes feels funny to leave a comment to win a prize, but I really hope that if you’re reading you’ll jump in and say something. Sometimes I don’t know what to say in posts like this. “I hope I win” doesn’t sound gracious. “Prizes are fun” is a little lame. Why don’t I ask you a question so this conversation won’t be so one-sided? In the comments, I’d like to know what your favorite thing is to order at Starbucks. Again, the winner will be chosen randomly and announced on Monday, December 7.
I’m going to go make myself a chai!
